Tahlequah is a Southern resident orca who made headlines worldwide in 2018 for carrying her dead female calf on her nose for over 3 weeks. In early 2025 she lost her second female calf and repeated her tour of grief for at least 11 days. 11 days of not eating, depending on the other members of her pod to help feed her two living sons while she carried J61. We have to do better for her and her species.
I designed this piece off my original orca design, and choose the glass very carefully. The baby orca had to be pink to represent her sex, but I wanted the mother's color to be similar so they paired like mother and daughter. I found my favorite glass that has variations in color where I achieved both. I don't mean to be a downer, but watching that intelligent, sentient being heartbroken yet again was too much for me, so I acted in the best way I can: through my art.
